What is a Facial Fracture?

A facial fracture refers to a break or crack in one or more bones of the face. These fractures can result from trauma such as accidents, falls, sports injuries, or physical assaults. Commonly affected areas include the cheekbones (zygomatic bone), jaw (mandible), nose, and orbital bones around the eyes.

Signs and Symptoms of Facial Fractures

Severe facial pain and swelling

Facial fractures typically cause intense pain at the injury site, accompanied by noticeable swelling that can worsen over time.

Bruising around the eyes or face

Discoloration and bruising, especially around the eyes (commonly known as “raccoon eyes”), may indicate underlying bone trauma.

Difficulty opening or closing the mouth

A broken jaw or cheekbone can restrict jaw movement, making it painful or impossible to open or close the mouth fully.

Numbness or tingling sensation in the face

Facial nerve damage or compression from the fracture may result in numbness or a tingling sensation around the cheeks, lips, or forehead.

Bleeding from the nose or mouth

Visible asymmetry or changes in facial structure can occur if bones are displaced or shattered due to trauma.

Misalignment or deformity of facial features

Internal injuries from facial fractures may lead to persistent bleeding from the nose, mouth, or even ears.

Vision problems if the orbital bones are affected

Fractures around the eye socket can lead to double vision, blurry sight, or difficulty moving the eyes properly.

Facial Fracture

Facial fracture repair is a procedure used to restore bone structure and function after trauma.

Facial fracture treatment involves repositioning broken facial bones and stabilizing them to ensure proper healing. Depending on the type and severity of the fracture, this may require surgical intervention using plates, screws, or wires. Restoring facial symmetry, function, and preventing long-term complications are key goals of treatment.
